Webby Person of the Year - Stephen Colbert!
by kevinmccaffrey
Stephen Colbert has been named the Webby Person of the Year. Before you get your panties in a bunch thinking it should have gone to this guy , we should specify that this award is for Colbert’s powerful presence on the internet.
The Webby Awards have been given out by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences since 1996. And like any self-respecting anonymous group who gives out awards, they managed to offset giving an award to someone everyone likes (Colbert) by also giving out a few awards that they will be able to feel embarrassed about for years to come. For instance, Artist of the Year: will.i.am. We like the Obama video too, but aren’t we using the term “artist” a little loosely? Will.i.am has, factually, made music, but artist? It’s like how the people on The Hills factually breathe and eat, but does that necessarily make them human?
Like the Oscars do, this academy also made sure to give a couple awards to things no one would ever actually see. Award for Best Celebrity Website goes to…the Annie Lennox website? Is Annie Lennox even still alive? (Ed. Note: Yes.) It’s like giving the best actress award to that French girl…maybe she was great, but who would even know? If you have Annie Lennox’s website bookmarked, that is a sure sign of only one thing: you have too many f*cking bookmarks.
