The ABC line up for the Fall of 2009 looks like it includes some real stinkers to be polite. Shows like “Hank” essentially a re-hash of the old “Green Acres” of the late 70’s are ready and geared up to pollute the broadcast air waves. However, the new series “Cougar Town” staring Courtney Cox doesn’t look half as bad as the title would leave me to believe. As I watched this preview for the first time I couldn’t comprehend that someone put this show on television. “Cougar Town, a show about a cougar trying to get laid? Come on!” And at first glance this series really does look like that is all the characters and plot have to offer.

However, taking another neutral glance at the trailer for “Cougar Town” it doesn’t look as bad as I once thought. I know the title lends itself to a slue of absurd jokes, however, this new show looks like the perfect puzzle piece to replace the hole left by the new age Golden Girls spin off that was “Sexy and the City.” What interests me about next years episodic series is that Cox’s has an actually personality. A dash of wit, a sprinkle of comedic desperation, a light touch a attitude that comes with age all wrapped up within a character that struggle to stay socially relevant. Though the secondary characters look like cheap cardboard archetypes, the premise of a mom struggling with her own image as she tries to raise a son and launch her career sounds kind-a intriguing.

My only hope for “Cougar Town” is that the show steers away from an older woman and her inane quest to get laid by younger men and focuses on the irony of her character’s life. Unfortunately the title seems to tell us that that is a hope best laid to rest. However, I’m going to give it a chance because for some odd reason I feel like this new Fall show might be, dare I say it, promising.
