Conan Gets Off to Flying Start then Quits

Conan O’Brien made his long awaited debut as the new host of the “Tonight Show” Monday night .  Then, in an unprecedented move, he  promptly turned around and told NBC Universal executives where they could shove it as he walked off the stage for the first and, apparently, last time.

“Yeah, I just wanted to see what it would feel like,” O’Brien said, host of NBC’s “Late Night” the past 15 years.  “I’m going back to New York now.”

The suits at NBC Universal are completely in shock.  “I’m completely in shock.”  Cheif Executive Officer Jeff Zucker shouted as he slammed his head against the side of a car door.  “He caught us with our pants down.  He caught America with their pants down!”

Ironically, the show opened with O’Brien running cross country from his old base New York to his new home (at least, momentarily) Los Angeles.  The bit ended with O’Brien being locked outside his new studio (again - at least, momentarily) and suddenly realizing he left his keys behind in New York.  There’s no word yet on whether he will run back or fly this time around.

When asked what O’Brien will do next, he simply smiled and said:  “I’ve always wanted to write children’s books.  Maybe I’ll get into that.  Or fly fishing?  I’ve always wanted to try that.  Do they really use the flies as bait?”

The “Tonight Show” debuted in 1954 and moved to NBC’s West Coast headquarters in Burbank in 1972 with the arrival of Johnny Carson. The show remained in Burbank through Jay Leno’s 17 seasons as host.  Last night’s show was the first to air at Universal Studios newly renovated Stage One.

“He’s not going to get away with this!,” Zucker shouted as picked up a butcher knife.  “Somebody get me Drew Carey on the phone!”
